Composing the Past: Writing in Ware-Lyndon House

January 16 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

$83 - $124.50

The Lyndon House Arts Center is pleased to offer, Composing the Past, Writing in the Ware-Lyndon House, with instructor Edward Stephens.

Taking our cues from the rooms of the historic Ware-Lyndon House, in this course we will craft poetry and short fiction that reanimates its preserved atmosphere with new life. Equal emphasis will be placed on creating an understanding of how life in such a house and among such objects may have functioned, as well as successfully applying the fundamental tenets of fiction and poetry in our work. Participants should expect to compose and revise their poems and flash-fictions both during and outside of class hours. In addition to writing and work-shopping, we will devote some class time to exploring the house and considering relevant examples of work by other authors. By the end of the course we will give a public reading of participants’ work, which will also be featured in a pamphlet on display in the Ware-Lyndon House. All experience levels welcome.
Participants should be prepared to compose both poetry and fiction, to share their work with the class, to offer constructive feedback on the work of their classmates, and to give a public reading.
Our final project will be 1 finished poem and 1 finished flash-fiction piece per participant, at least one of which will be anthologized in the pamphlet.

What to Bring: Pencil/pen and notebook required. Computers discouraged, but allowed.

Edward Stephens has published short fiction, criticism, and poetry in various print and online publications such as Blue Ridge Literary Prose, and The Pitkin Review, and he currently serves as Submissions Editor for the last of these. He has been the proprietor of the blogs A Fire Was in My Head and Best’s Bindery, which featured his poetry and criticism. He is pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. He lives in Athens, where he is hard at work on a novel called The Custodians, his first.
