Rosalynn Carter said it best: “There are only four kinds of people in the world. Those who have been caregivers. Those who are currently caregivers. Those who will be caregivers, and those who will need a caregiver.” In our cover story, Arlene Williams profiles several women who are in the middle of various caregiving situations. They share how they keep their balance, and how they navigate the emotional ups and downs of this universal experience. This will be a multi-part series because there are so many aspects.

There’s so much to see and go and do in the Athens area that we continue to make it into the top 10 of retirement locations. Reading Joy Ovington’s round-up of the many and varied theatre groups in the area, you can understand the richness of the community and why people would be drawn here. And then there’s music making –it’s good for the aging brain, not to mention fun. Bowen Craig sat in on the New Horizons program in the UGA Community Music School and found folks who haven’t picked up an instrument in 40 years, or maybe never, who are having the time of their lives. Two brothers, Rick and Ron Waters, took the Woodpecker Trail to Florida back in the 1960s, and they still enjoy it today. After reading their article, you’ll want to fill up the gas tank and explore this historic highway. There are 5 million book clubs in the U.S., and we have quite a few of them here. Kelly Capers discovered they run the gamut, from African-American books to Romance novels, and everything in between. We wrap up with two thoughtful contributions in the Boomers Write section, and finally, without planning it, my column came together in an unexpected, serendipitous way. Enjoy and learn and empathize.
